Custom workshops for flagship headquarters

When creating a workshop for their new 'state-of-the-art' headquarters, NIFRS selected Dura as the team to meet the challenge. Drawing from many years of workshop design, the Dura team developed customised furniture configurations to deliver improved work efficiency for a time-critical environment.

The Logistics Support Centre is a purpose-built logistics support centre in Belfast and represents an investment of £8.2million for NIFRS. In addition to emergency call-outs, this flagship location brings together several key facilities under one roof, including firefighter training, transport, equipment maintenance and a community engagement hub. The Station's workshop is responsible for all 20 fire stations in Western Area Command, and the maintenance of all of their vehicles and the fire-fighting equipment carried within them.

With such a variety of tasks being carried out under one roof, the project represented a unique challenge. Dura worked closely with NIFRS to understand their work processes enabling them to establish the best furniture configuration for maximising work efficiency, which resulted in tailored cabinet layouts for individual task areas throughout the workshop. The new maintenance areas enable technicians to work seamlessly on a wide variety of tasks, from minor jobs to heavy-duty repair work. All workstations were configured with integrated storage drawers for tools and equipment, electrical facilities and space for stowing a mobile trolley. Task specific equipment, such as computer monitors were added where required and stainless steel tops selected for a robust worksurface. Using the latest CAD techniques, Dura's design team created photo-realistic 3D renders to visualise the new spaces ‐ enabling NIFRS to assess and refine their requirements prior to cabinet manufacture. The entire schedule of furniture was custom painted in NIFRS's corporate red and branded with their Service's insignia.

NIFRS now have an impressive facility setting the standard for emergency vehicle maintenance. It provides an effective solution for their demanding workload, as well as 'future-proofing' the space for organisational growth. The design demonstrates how careful workshop planning has succeeded in accommodating the ever-changing needs of a modern and progressive Fire Service.

"The NIFRS Logistics Support Centre is a flagship facility not just for our firefighters and personnel but also for the local community they serve and protect, as well as for our partner agencies involved in emergency response".
